Eastlake Student Council Named Coordinator of TASC State Conference

For the first time in SISD history, one of its high schools has been chosen to serve as the state conference school coordinator for the Texas Association of Student Councils annual conference.

The Falcons will plan everything about the 2020 conference from the opening production and registration to T-shirt design and the program.

The event, which will feature about 5,000 high school students and advisors, will take place in the Dallas region. It is the largest gathering of student leaders in the world.

“I am beyond thrilled,” said Kelley Akins, Eastlake’s student council advisor and activities director. “When I came to Eastlake, I told them that was my biggest dream to have the Falcon Student Council be conference coordinators. My dream has come true.”

Akins is familiar with putting together a state conference. She did it as a student conference coordinator at Eastwood High School in 2006.

Eastwood is the only other school in the El Paso region to be a conference coordinator. It also did it in 1997.

“My life as an advisor has come full circle,” she said. “It’s amazing.”

Planning will take many months for the more than 100 members of the Falcon student council, led by student conference coordinator, Gibby Widner, a junior at Eastlake and current student body vice president. They must fundraise more than $65,000.

The council also will have a conference theme to be approved by the TASC board in July 2019.

“We have already started,” Akins said. “This will be biggest endeavor we have ever undertaken. But I know my students can do this. I have done it and they can do it, too.”

Carmen Crosse, assistant superintendent of secondary for SISD, is proud of Akins and the Falcon students.

“This is exciting,” Crosse said. “What a great opportunity to showcase the amazing leadership we have in Team SISD.”
