As news spread throughout the Sun City Sunday night of the loss of El Paso County Sheriff’s Deputy Pete Herrera, his fellow deputies were warning the community of several fund raising scams that have sprung up.

Via a news release, El Paso County Sheriff’s Office (EPCSO) Officials shared the information regarding the scams, and the only two official fundraisers for Deputy Herrera’s family.

“The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office has become aware of scams surrounding the passing of our brother Deputy Peter Herrera.

The scammers are calling individuals asking for donations to benefit Deputy Herrera’s family in the form of gift cards.

The only two legitimate fundraising campaigns at this time are the online fundraising campaigns organized by Adrian Gonzales on behalf of the Sheriff’s Office, and the El Paso County Sheriff’s Officers Association.

The Sheriff’s Office would like to make the public aware that representatives of the Sheriff’s Office will not solicit donations over the phone much less in the form of gift cards.”

EPCSO officials added that the following two links were the only authorized fundraisers for Deputy Herrera and his family: Via Facebook or the GoFundMe page.

Deputy Herrera was shot early Friday morning, after a traffic stop in San Elizario.  The suspect, 27-year-old Facundo Chavez was arrested and taken into custody. The investigation into the shooting continues.

As for any services for Deputy Herrera, EPCSO officials have not released any details.

As this is a developing story, we will continue to update you as the situation develops and as new details come in.
