Man Hospitalized after Incident Involving Kitchen Fire, Live Ordnance

A man is sent to the hospital, and a neighborhood is slowly returning to normal after a Tuesday afternoon incident in Horizon City.

According to HCFD Chief Chris Menendez, crews were dispatched to the 3600 Block of Alderwood Manor just before 2pm.  When they arrived, they found Horizon City PD officers tending to a man in front of the home.  The HCPD officers alerted the firefighters to a fire in the kitchen of the home, and they entered and began to fight the fire.

Once inside, firefighters came across what Chief Menendez described as ‘live ammunition.’ Crews were able to bring the fire under control and then call the bomb squad to dispose of the ordnance, and to make the home was clear.

Homes immediately surrounding the home in question were evacuated, while others were sheltering in place. The County Fire Marshal will investigate the fire, to determine the cause.

There were no reported injuries as a result of the kitchen fire, however officials later said the man would be taken to the hospital for observation.

In addition to Horizon PD and HCFD, fire crews from Socorro, Montana Vista, and Clint were on hand to assist.
